This help page is intended to assist with the operation and maintenance of the clubs Concept 2 based Paddle ERGs (PERGs). Your can jump directly to sections on this page by clicking on one these topic headings:
Please leave the PERG in a clean condition after you use it.
With a small hand towel or similar wipe any sweat from the seat and paddle. Just like you would do at the GYM - this is good social edicate.
Please inform the Maintenance Officer if a low battery warning has appeared on the monitor screen (and/or or ErgData software if used). This will ensure that the batteries can be replaced in a timely manner to support future users.
Storage
Performance Monitor (PM5)
The Bei Loon Paddle ERG (PERG) is a modified version of the popular Concept 2 Row ERG. It uses the PM5 (Performance Monitor series 5) to record your session details.
Turning On and Off
The PM5 turns on automatically when you do any of the following:
Pull the paddle,
Push any button
After a couple of minutes of inactivity it will automatically turn off ( the count starts once the flywheel stops).
Viewing Drag Factor
Drag factor is a measure of fan load and is set by moving the damper lever on the flywheel. The PM5 self-calibrates by recalculating the drag factor on every pull.
To view drag factor on the PM5:
On the Main Menu, select More Options.
Select Display Drag Factor.
Begin paddling. The PM5 will display the drag factor after a few seconds.
Storing Your work-out Data
The PM5 stores over 1000 workouts into memory. All preset workouts, and any "Just Row" workouts longer than 1minute/100m will be automatically recorded.
By using the optional ErgData app loaded onto your SmartPhone, it is possible via a bluetooth wireless connection to easily record all session data to a log of previous workout achievements.
ErgData is a free app for iOS and Android devices that can connect to a PM5 (the controller) via Bluetooth. Use ErgData to setup your workouts, view additional statistics, save your results, and easily synchronize them with your Concept2 Online Logbook account.
The Concept PM5s use two 1.5V D cell batteries. Please replace in pairs, and fit only known good quality types (eg Eveready, Duracell, VARTA).
Checking the Battery Level:
On the Main Menu, select More Options.
Select Utilities.
Select Battery. The amount of power left will be displayed as a percentage.
Replacing the Battery Cells:
PM5 Firmware Update
Firmware is the computer program embedded in and running your ERG Performance Monitor (PM5). Concept 2 strongly recommend that the firmware is kept up to date with the current version.
For the Bei Loon PM5 model, the recommended way way to update firmware is wirelessly via the ErgData User Software.
Step to update Firmware:
Open ErgData and connect with the Concept 2 PM5 controller
A notification will appear if the PM5 needs a firmware update.
Tap on the PM5 ID which appears, then tap on “More Info” for instructions on how to proceed with the wireless firmware update.
Determine current installed Firmware Version:
Turn the Concept 2 PM5 on by pressing any button
Select " More Options > Utilities > More Utilities > Product ID "
The firmware version will be listed as the top line on the Product ID screen.

Daily Maintenance or After use
Please leave the PERG in a clean condition after you use it.
With a small hand towel or similar wipe any sweat from the seat and paddle. Just like you would do at the GYM - this is good social edicate.

Routine Maintenance
Every 50 hours of Use (or 3 monthly)
Lubricate the chain with a teaspoon of purified mineral oil, 3-IN-ONE® oil, or 20W motor oil. Apply oil to a paper towel, and rub the paper towel along entire length of chain. Wipe off the excess. Repeat if needed. DO NOT CLEAN the chain with any kind of cleaner or solvent, e.g. WD-40®.
Every 250 hours of use (or 6 months)
Inspect the chain for stiff links. If stiff links are found, and if thorough lubrication does not help, replace the chain.
Tighten the shock cord if the handle does not return all the way to the fan enclosure. SeeShock Cord Adjustment (PDF).
Check screws for tightness, including those used for assembly.
Details on how to fold and store the Concept 2 ERG can be found in the manual (see below).

. The Performance Monitor self-calibrates on the RowErg and SkiErg by recalculating the drag factor on every pull, and the BikeErg needs to be calibrated from time to time. On all our ergs, you get a true measure of your effort regardless of the damper setting or changing conditions. You can adjust the drag factor by moving the damper lever on the flywheel.
