We are a family
Bei Loon takes the health and safety of every member seriously.
If you have an immediate concern please bring it to the attention of your Team Captain, Head coach or our Safety Officer (or other nearby members as needs be).
Please raise other safety related matters as soon a practical with our Club President or Safety Officer, either in person or via suitable means such as email.
Staying Safe
Assess you own level of fitness and health. Only participate in an event if you are capable of safely doing so.
Never particiapate if you are affected by drugs or alcohol.
As a courtesy to you fellow paddlers, if you are feeling unwell with cold or flu symptoms, consider whether you should be attending.
If you dont know what to do in the event of a capsize, discuss this with one of our coaches. We also have a useful video here.
Are you a competant swimmer? If not that doesn't preclude your participation at all, just make sure that our coaches and selectors are aware before going out on the water.
At training we always count off the number of people on board each individual boat. Treat this seriously, no mucking around.
Reporting and Learning
As part of our safety framework it is important that any incidents, hazards, and risks during regattas, training sessions, and any other club-related activities be activitely reported and recorded.
At Bei Loon we utilise the Safe365 APP as a tool, which is promoted by the Australian Dragon Boat Federation (AUSDBF); to collectively make the sport safer across all clubs. The following information is provided, courtesy of AusDBF.
Incident Reporting
Incident reports are to be submitted upon all near-misses, incidents, and injuries involving any member or participant. This includes reporting on close calls and near-misses to be submitted through the Safe365 APP as well. This is where a situation may occur where no harm or damage is caused through luck. However, this could be an issue again in the future, so it needs to be recorded.
The reporting of incidents (data) is important to AusDBF, as the reports assist AusDBF in understanding trends or common events across clubs to better direct training, education, and resources across the membership.
An incident report must be submitted after anything happens to incur injury or harm.
NOTE: For data to be useful, AusDBF encourages all clubs to complete the reporting with as much information as possible.
- Incident name: Include type of injury
- Contract: include the injured person's name
- Incident date:
- Type of Incident: select the most appropriate (appreciate injury could fit into more than 1 category)
- Address: Try to provide as accurate an address as possible, land is easier than a location on the water, mid a training session.
- What happened: Provide a brief description of the incident
- Action Taken: Provide brief details of what action was taken following the incident (if anything)
- Suggested Action: Has the club reviewed the incident, and what changes has the club put into place to prevent the same injury/incident from reoccurring?
- There is space for additional notes and attachment to support injury (if required)
Some of the reports being submitted have only provided limited information, which doesn't help when reviewing the incident or seeing if a pattern is occurring that AusDBF may need to address.
Hazard and Risk Reporting
Where a hazard or risk is evident or encountered in clubs or when participating in training (clubs / State Rep / Aurora) sessions, regattas, or community events, it is important to report through the areas of risk or potential injury hazards. Submitting these items via the Safe365 APP helps AusDBF understand the risk areas and identify broader trends or hazards encountered across the organisation. The more hazard or risk reports received help all of us to develop a safer sporting environment for all members and participants.
Health and Safety is a collective responsibility. Report anything you see that could cause harm or injury.
If your club hosts a regatta, then someone should be nominated as the Safety Officer, and they are responsible for submitting any injury reports that may have occurred during the regatta.
The AusDBF Board reviews all the Injury and Risk reports submitted each month at their Board meeting. Congratulations to the clubs that have embraced using Safe365, keep up the good work.
