2025 Lunar New Year Festival Races - Darling Harbour

Published Sat 22 Feb 2025

The day was hot but fortunately we had a light breeze off the water to make it tolerable. As there were so many teams, we had to be on alert for marshalling. Bei Loon did an admirable job of being in the right place at the right time.

If you have received a link to give feedback to DBNSW, please do so. Organisers are keen to keep us happy in racing. I was contacted directly by David Krantz CEO for feedback. Amongst other things we discussed the concept of events such as LNY and Summer Splash being only one category, that is Open Age. There will be more information to come from DBNSW regarding new categories for next season as the organisation grapples with increasing numbers of members across a range of age groups. I also mentioned the ongoing problem of toilet facilities. He explained that in order to please residents of Darling Harbour, they were restricted to setting up these facilities until after a time in the morning when paddlers were beginning to arrive. It is expected that next year construction of a toilet block behind where we were seated would be completed. Finger (legs?) crossed!

Although it was a long busy day, we still had time for a laugh and a chat. We had some good results and team spirit was the overall winner on the day.

There was great excitement when the Women's Salt team came first in their final after starting the race in lane 6, with the slowest times in the heats. I don't quite comprehend these labels of A, B, C etc and Minor and Major for the finals. Will need to read the fine print and consult our coaches for a better understanding.

The Pinks competed on Sunday in the inaugural Pink Championship which included 7 Breast Cancer Survivor teams. As well as Pinks, the team was allowed a limited number of supporters and Vicki joined as sweep while Barbara and Arthur paddled.

The team placed 3rd and 1st in their heats and despite having only 17 paddlers in the final they achieved 3rd place and received a medal. Their results were:

Heat 1, 3rd place 1:03:91
Heat 2, 1st place 1:01:12
FINAL, 3rd place 1:02:14

So that's Lunar New Year until 2025!

Cheers
Jo
